A statement by MAAN Workers Association, a union of Israelis and Palestinians March 4th
Since Thursday, February 24, the Russian war machine has been operating on Ukrainian soil. Russian army planes, missiles and tanks have crossed the border in blatant violation of international law, causing killing and destruction. Thousands of civilians have been killed so far and about a million have become refugees. In the face of the barbaric attack on his sovereignty and freedom, the Ukrainian people are showing impressive courage.
Using brutal military violence, Russian ruler Putin returns Europe to the terrible 1940s. But this time he is faced with a united and determined international front, led by US President Biden, who defined the confrontation in his recent state of the union speech as a confrontation between democracy and autocracy – between the past and the future.
In this campaign for the future of Europe and the world, we discover the truth about the Israeli leadership, which sees the world as Vladimir Putin does. In the UN Security Council, Israel refrained from denouncing the Russian invasion. Retired Israeli generals explain on TV that a military invasion of the kind that Putin is conducting today is legitimate.
While European countries receive refugees from Ukraine, Israel continues its policy of opacity and cruelty and closes its gates to refugees from the fighting zone.
In this fateful confrontation we in MAAN stand in the democratic camp and against the murderous regime that Putin has forced upon the Russian people for over twenty years.
As an organization that champions equal partnership between Israelis and Palestinians, struggling daily for workers’ rights, human rights and women’s equality, we stand by the Ukrainian people who are fighting for their own freedom and the freedom of Europe.
Whoever believes like us in the right of every man and woman to a life of dignity, equality and well-being cannot remain indifferent in the face of the terrible war in Ukraine.
Yes to democracy and human rights! Not to wars and occupations!
