Palestinian women entering Israel to work complain of sexual harassment on the waiting line inside the Checkpoint

Palestinian women who arrive at the Sha’ar Ephraim checkpoint, south of  Tulkarm  on the way to work inside Israel, report frequent sexual harassment within the area of the checkpoint designated for women only. Some of the the women who spoke to MAAN and complained about the unbearable situation (they spoke to Wafa Tayara from MAAN on condition of anonymity), dubbed the checkpoint "ma'ata", a device for plucking the feathers of chickens before slaughter

According to testimonies we gathered, there are 4 gates in the Checkpoint – three gates are designated for men and one for women. Nevertheless, some men – workers on their way to work in Israel also – join the crowded women’s line in the pre-dawn hours. They take advantage of the darkness and lack of supervision to approach the women, photograph them, touch them against their will, and abuse them verbally. This behavior goes on unchecked within a facility staffed by the Crossing Points Authority of Israel’s Ministry of Defense.

On Tuesday Sep. 6th MAAN sent a letter to the Crossing Points Authority, signed by Wafa Tiara, Women’s Coordinator at MAAN, and Assaf Adiv, the union’s Executive Director. In the letter MAAN demanded that the Manager of the Sha’ar Ephraim Checkpoint take the following steps:

• Place prominent signage that the passage is For Women Only and prohibit men from entering there.

• Place signs prohibiting sexual harassment and making explicit the rights of women.

• Post guards and install cameras.

• Refuse to admit men entering Israel through the women’s gate.

MAAN publicized its appeal to the Israeli Authorities on its Facebook page and also in the local press. In an interview with Radio Nas in Arabic on Sept. 7, Assaf Adiv indicated that women who arrive at the checkpoint in the pre-dawn hours are our sisters and should be respected by co-workers. Instead of Showy Arrests, Let Palestinian Workers Return to Construction

The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, which came into effect on Wednesday, November 27, marks the end of the war in Lebanon. If it holds, a period of reconstruction will begin, bringing a dramatic increase in the need for workers in the construction sector. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Palestinians are waiting for the government to allow them back into construction sites in Israel. Thousands of contractors are also desperate for skilled labor, reporting that the foreign workers they have managed to recruit are too few and insufficiently trained.

COGAT Obstructs Entry of Palestinian Workers Essential for Olive Harvesting

For years, Israel’s olive harvest has relied on 10,000 Palestinian workers (usually some 3000 families) from the West Bank who receive permits to work in Israel in the season. The sector employs these workers each year to pick tens of thousands of tons of olives from September to December, in groves stretching from the Negev to the Upper Galilee.

As an organization committed to the rights of workers without distinction of religion, race, nationality, gender, or profession - democracy is our essence. We strongly oppose the authoritarian laws that the extreme government of Netanyahu, Lapid, Bennett, and Smotrich is attempting to impose.

Without democracy, there are no workers' rights, just as a workers' organization cannot exist under dictatorship.

only a victory of the democratic camp will enable a discussion on the Palestinian issue and lead to an alternative solution to occupation and apartheid while ensuring human rights and citizenship for all, Israelis and Palestinians alike. As long as the apartheid regime persists, the democratic camp will not succeed in defeating Israeli extremists. Therefore, we work to involve the Arab and Palestinian society in the protest.

We invite you:

To march with us in protests and to build an alternative, democratic, Jewish-Arab professional union in Israel. Join our quiet WhatsApp group today, "Marching with us in protest."
