Government Orders Hotels to Replace Palestinians with Sri Lankans

Since 2019, Akram Suleiman worked at Fattal Hotels by the Dead Sea. A native of Dahariya near Hebron, the 60-year-old father of four grown up, married children viewed his job as sacred. Managing pools and spas offered him a dignified livelihood. He proudly showcased images from the hotel life in Ein Bokek (the Dead Sea Hotels zone), including his tenure certificate and an award of excellence, alongside shared meals with colleagues.

Petition to High Court of Justice: The secretive and unimpeded entry of migrant workers, will lead to extreme exploitation and severely harm Palestinian workers and the Israeli labor market.

MAAN joined other groups in filing a petition to the High Court of Justice against the Israeli government, demanding that authorities be held accountable to prevent the extreme exploitation of migrant workers, which could reach conditions of actual slavery. The petition, filed July 18th warns of the destructive impact of massive and unregulated importation of workers on the overall Israeli labor market, the severe harm to Palestinian workers’ ability to earn a living, and the expected damage to the Palestinian economy and regional security. The petitioners accuse the government of making these fateful decisions in secrecy.

On Sunday, December 13, 2015, the Israeli daily Calcalist (Yediot Aharonot’s economic supplement) published an article that announced the failure of the deal between Israel and China, which had been slated to allow the importation of 20,000 Chinese workers as bonded labour to work in the Israeli construction industry.

Exploitation of migrant labor, unemployment in Arab villages… Who cares?

The Nov. 28 session of the Knesset Committee on Foreign Workers was intended to debate putting an end to the import of migrant labor for construction and agriculture, and encouraging Israeli workers in these sectors. But instead, we were witness once again to a display of impotency in the face of the powerful farmers’ lobby. The debate exposed the well-known fact that there is nobody in the political establishment who is able or willing to do what must clearly be done: stopping the import of migrant laborers and opening up jobs to local workers especially Arab women.

‘1,000 Israeli women want to work in agriculture’

Next week we may go shopping at the supermarket, the town markets or the corner store, and find ourselves standing before empty shelves: farmers’ organizations including the Israel Farmers Federation, the Growers’ Union and the Poultry Farmers’ Association are threatening to strike, cutting off all supplies for three days.

Without democracy, there are no workers' rights, just as a workers' organization cannot exist under dictatorship.

only a victory of the democratic camp will enable a discussion on the Palestinian issue and lead to an alternative solution to occupation and apartheid while ensuring human rights and citizenship for all, Israelis and Palestinians alike. As long as the apartheid regime persists, the democratic camp will not succeed in defeating Israeli extremists. Therefore, we work to involve the Arab and Palestinian society in the protest.
