Call for solidarity with Tuba-Zangariyeh Arab residents following mosque arson

By torching the mosque in the Arab Village of Tuba-Zangariyeh in the North on the night of Oct. 2, the racists of the extreme right expressed their hatred for Israel's Arab citizens. In everyday reality, the village of Tuba-Zangariyeh suffers from severe discrimination in infrastructure and employment at the hands of Israel's various governments. Thousands are employed in factories and farms in the region as manpower contractor laborers, without peripheral benefits. The Tzahar Industrial Park, located next to the town, pays land taxes to nearby Jewish towns (Safed, Hazor and Rosh Pina) but Tuba-Zangariyeh doesn't receive any of the revenues. It's not the rightwing phalanxes who harm the town's residents - it's the policies of Israel's governments that make life hell for them.

By torching the mosque in the Arab Village of Tuba-Zangariyeh in the North on the night of Oct. 2, the racists of the extreme right expressed their hatred for Israel’s Arab citizens. In everyday reality, the village of Tuba-Zangariyeh suffers from severe discrimination in infrastructure and employment at the hands of Israel’s various governments. Thousands are employed in factories and farms in the region as manpower contractor laborers, without peripheral benefits. The Tzahar Industrial Park, located next to the town, pays land taxes to nearby Jewish towns (Safed, Hazor and Rosh Pina) but Tuba-Zangariyeh doesn’t receive any of the revenues. It’s not the rightwing phalanxes who harm the town’s residents – it’s the policies of Israel’s governments that make life hell for them.

The Village is home to hardworking people, laboring via manpower contractors in the Pri Hagalil factory, as truckers in haulage firms, and in agriculture. Most of the town’s residents suffer from poverty and injurious employment terms.

There are also hundreds of thousands of Jewish workers working in the same factories and under the same employment terms. They all deserve social justice, they all deserve to live without fear and threats. Only through fraternity, only by organizing together, can they ensure their rights. However, these vindictive and criminal acts aim to destroy any spirit of solidarity, and prevent the workers from pulling themselves out of the mire. The time has come to stop amusing ourselves with the groundless idea that “there is no left and right.”

The “price tag” act in Tuba-Zangariyeh is a racist act of the extreme right which enjoys the support of the rightwing, racist government of Benjamin Netanyahu, Avigdor Lieberman and Ehud Barak. Those who incited ceaselessly against the Arab population are today reaping the harvest of their words in the form of vindictive violence against hardworking residents just for being Arabs.

We at the Workers Advice Center counter this racism with solidarity and equality. We call on those who demonstrated for social justice to stand by us now in support of the residents of Tuba-Zangariyeh, to demand the perpetrators of the mosque arson be brought to justice, and to insist on fundamental change to the discriminatory policies against the Arab population of Israel. This government inciting racism against Arab citizens is the same government taking advantage of racism and implementing “divide and rule” tactics to better serve the tycoons and rob ordinary citizens, both Jews and Arabs, of the right to welfare and social justice – this robbing, at least, is egalitarian.

No social justice can take root in the shadow of racism. The struggle for social justice and the struggle against racism must be aimed at the same target: the government. And the response to both exploitation and racism must be the organization of workers, both Jews and Arabs together.

The answer to racism: organization of Jewish and Arab workers

Instead of Showy Arrests, Let Palestinian Workers Return to Construction

The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, which came into effect on Wednesday, November 27, marks the end of the war in Lebanon. If it holds, a period of reconstruction will begin, bringing a dramatic increase in the need for workers in the construction sector. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Palestinians are waiting for the government to allow them back into construction sites in Israel. Thousands of contractors are also desperate for skilled labor, reporting that the foreign workers they have managed to recruit are too few and insufficiently trained.

COGAT Obstructs Entry of Palestinian Workers Essential for Olive Harvesting

For years, Israel’s olive harvest has relied on 10,000 Palestinian workers (usually some 3000 families) from the West Bank who receive permits to work in Israel in the season. The sector employs these workers each year to pick tens of thousands of tons of olives from September to December, in groves stretching from the Negev to the Upper Galilee.

As an organization committed to the rights of workers without distinction of religion, race, nationality, gender, or profession - democracy is our essence. We strongly oppose the authoritarian laws that the extreme government of Netanyahu, Lapid, Bennett, and Smotrich is attempting to impose.

Without democracy, there are no workers' rights, just as a workers' organization cannot exist under dictatorship.

only a victory of the democratic camp will enable a discussion on the Palestinian issue and lead to an alternative solution to occupation and apartheid while ensuring human rights and citizenship for all, Israelis and Palestinians alike. As long as the apartheid regime persists, the democratic camp will not succeed in defeating Israeli extremists. Therefore, we work to involve the Arab and Palestinian society in the protest.

We invite you:

To march with us in protests and to build an alternative, democratic, Jewish-Arab professional union in Israel. Join our quiet WhatsApp group today, "Marching with us in protest."
